Obituary of Mary T. (O'Connor) McCarthy
Mary T. (O’Connor) McCarthy, R.N., of Peabody, died peacefully at her home on Saturday evening with her family by her side after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Eugene L. McCarthy. She was born in Lawrence on December 6, 1919 the daughter of the late Daniel J. and Mary J. (Linehan) O’Connor and was a graduate of St. Mary’s School in Lawrence and St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing in Lowell.
Mary entered the US Army in 1943 and served during WW 11 in the European Theatre and the Rhineland and later in No. Africa before returning to Maxwell Field in Alabama prior to her discharge as a First Lieutenant in 1946. She was a charter member and an honoree at the Women’s Memorial that was dedicated in Washington, D.C. in 2002.
Following her marriage to her husband, she had resided in Peabody for the past 62 years. She had been a nurse at the Salem Hospital for 20 years prior to her retirement. She had been an active communicant of St. John’s Church and a member of the Ladies Sodality. She was also a member of the Peabody Historical Society and enjoyed gardening around her house and cooking.
Mary loved to travel to Ireland and visit with her relatives there. Last December 6th, her family and friends honored her on her 90th Birthday at a local restaurant.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jo and Michael Chenery of Groveland, a brother, D. Joseph O’Connor of No Andover, a sister, Kathleen M. Gordon of Norwell, her cherished grandchildren, Daniel J. McCarthy of NC, Sean P. McCarthy of Nashua, NH, Sean M. Chenery and Kathleen M. Chenery both of Groveland, a great granddaughter, Andrea McCarthy of Nashua, NH and many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Eugene L. McCarthy Jr., and the sister of the late Henry and Francis and Joanna D. O’Connor.
A Visitation will be held on Monday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Conway,Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., Peabody facility. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday at 8:00 AM from the Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John’s Peabody at 9:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Catholic Charities North, 55 Shore Drive, Lynn MA 01902.
