Obituary of Elizabeth Virginia (Journee) Harkins

Elizabeth Betty Virginia (Journee) Harkins, 90, of Peabody died Monday evening at the Rosewood Nursing Home, West Peabody after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Francis B. Harkins who died in 1976. She was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, the daughter of the late Josiah and Mary (Brensen) Journee and had resided in Peabody for the past 68 years. She was employed in the City of Peabody School Department in the Cafeteria Division for twenty years prior to her retirement in 1989. She was first employed as a manager in the kitchen clubhouse of the former United Shoe Golf Course in Beverly. Mrs. Harkins was an active member for over 50 years and was a past president of the Emblem Club # 2 of Peabody . She also held many state and national officers with the Emblem Club. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles Harkins of Beverly and Thomas and Janyce Harkins of Peabody, a sister, Mrs. Mary Lee Sellers of Peabody, 4 grandchildren, James Harkins of Peabody, Charles Harkins Jr. of Warwick, NY, Soynja Browne of Freemont, NH and Kimberly Burgess of Md., 10 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Her Funeral will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. from the Conway,Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 12 Chestnut St., Peabody facility followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John’ s Church at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. A Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Emblem Club # 2 Scholarship Fund, c/o P.O. Box 19, Peabody, MA 01960 in her memory.
