Obituary of Charles "Charlie" Patermo

Charles “Charlie” Patermo, 74, of Peabody died on Monday, April 19, 2010 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Vincenza (Simeone) Patermo with whom he shared 50 years of marriage. Born in Riesi, Sicily, Mr. Patermo was the son of Josephine (Gerbino) Patermo and the late Vincenzo Patermo. He was educated in Sicily where he attended 3 years of medical school before leaving to tend to family responsibilities. At age 22 he emigrated to the United States. He taught himself to write and speak the English language. During his career Mr. Patermo worked at General Electric, Raytheon and then Digital Equipment Corporation for over 25 years. Upon his retirement, he went to work for the Internal Revenue Service in Andover, MA. Charlie loved life to the fullest. His family was the center of his universe where he cherished his children and grandchildren. He was the father figure overseeing his Sunday family barbecues which were legendary. Family and friends alike clamored for his “Papa Charlie Cookies”. Additionally, Mr. Patermo was an avid gardener tending to his vegetables and fruit trees. To be in his back yard was like being in a little piece of Sicily. As a sports fan, Charlie loved his Boston sports teams, and in his younger days had played semi-professional soccer in Sicily. Besides his wife and his mother of NY, Mr. Patermo is survived by a son and two daughters and their spouses, Peabody Police Sergeant Vincent and Donna Patermo of Peabody, Joyce and Steve Martin, and Susan and Ron Collins of Nashua, NH, a brother and sister-in-law Enzo and Rosa Patermo, of Sicily, and a sister and her husband Lina and Antonio Calascibetta of NY. Papa Charlie also leaves 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild, Christina, Victoria, Lyndsay, Gianna, Elaina, Calogero, Jasmine, Sam, Charlie, Nathaniel, Isabella, Sophia and Taylor and countless nieces and nephews.. His funeral service will be held on Friday, April 23, 2010 at 8:45 a.m. from the Conway Cahill- Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn Street, Peabody followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Adelaide Church, 708 Lowell St., Peabody. Visiting hours are Thursday, April 22, 2010 from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
