Obituary of John D. O'Brien

John D. O’ Brien 80 years, husband of Lucy C. (Mallia) O’ Brien of Peabody, died Tuesday morning at the Salem Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. O’ Brien was born September 23, 1924 in Jamaica Plains son of the late John E. and Margaret (Corcoran) O’ Brien. He was raised in Boston and graduated from Boston English High School Class of 1942. He then enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served for 3 years during WWII. Upon his return from the service he pursued his education and received his degree in Business Administration in 1950 from Boston College. He moved to Peabody in 1972. Mr. O’ Brien was employed for 32 years with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health as a health inspector and was promoted to supervisor, a position that he held for many years until his retirement in 1986. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and playing cards especially bridge with his many friends. He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church in Peabody, a member of the Vittore Rocci Post 56 in Beverly and a sports enthusiast. In addition to his wife of 46 years he is survived by 4 sons and 2 daughters-in-law, Kevin M. O’ Brien, Thomas J. O’ Brien, Kenneth S. and Christine O’ Brien all of Peabody, Daniel P. and Veronica O’ Brien of Haverhill; 2 sisters, Mary McDermott and Margaret Hesselschwerdt both of Norwood; 4 grandchildren, Joseph P. and Eva K. O’ Brien of Peabody, Kelly R. and Timothy D. O’ Brien of Haverhill and many nieces and nephews. Pre deceased by a sister Catherine E. Rosata. His funeral will be held Friday at 8 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St. location, Peabody followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, 16 Church St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Thursday 4 - 8 p.m. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the North Shore Medical Center, Salem Hospital, 81 Highland Ave., Salem MA 01970.
