Obituary of James A. "Jimmy" Tsoulas

James A. “Jimmy” Tsoulas, 83, Peabody Police Lieutenant, Ret., husband of Effie (Pappacostas) Tsoulas of Peabody, died at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Monday, July 19, 2010 after a brief illness. Mr. Tsoulas was born on February 26, 1927, in Peabody, the son of the late Angelo and Constadina (Liatsis) Tsoulas. Jimmy was raised and educated in Peabody. During WWII Jim joined the Merchant Marines, and in 1947 he enlisted into the U.S. Army, and served with the 67th MP Company and served during the Korean Conflict until receiving his honorable discharge. In 1954, Jimmy joined the City of Peabody Police Department as a reserve patrolman. In 1956, he was appointed as a regular patrolman, obtaining the rank of Sergeant in 1969 and Lieutenant in 1971. He retired in 1987 after 33 years of dedicated service to the City of Peabody. He also owned & operated Peabody Cycle Sales on Foster St., Peabody for many years. Jimmy was a member of the Jordan Lodge A.F. & A.M., a 32nd Degree Mason and Lodge Master from 1977-1978, also a member of the Aleppo Temple of Wilmington, Italian American Citizens Club, Peabody Lodge of Elks 1409, Massachusetts Police and Square Club in Boston and the Massachusetts Police Association. He dedicated his life to his family and so proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments. Jimmy and his wife Effie wintered in Florida and loved to dance. In addition to his wife with whom he shared 59 years of marriage, he is survived by 2 sons and their wives, Van J. and Colleen Tsoulas of Peabody, and Jon Jay and Jeanne Tsoulas of Orlando, FL; 2 grandchildren, Van J. Tsoulas II of Peabody and Zachary W. Taylor of Wells, ME; 2 sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Dena Tsoulas, and Mary and Richard Kohut all of Peabody; and many nieces and nephews. His siblings Sophie Andros and George Tsoulas predeceased him. His funeral will be held on Friday, July 23, 2010 at 9 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home followed by a service at 10 a.m. at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 7 Paleologos St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Thursday, July 22, 2010 from 5 to 8 p.m. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jimmy’s name to the Shriners Burns Hospital, www.shrinershq.org/hospitals/main , 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02116. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
