Obituary of Bartol "Gus" Merluzzo

Bartol “Gus” Merluzzo (flag please) PEABODY—Bartol “Gus” Merluzzo, 89, beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Shannon) Merluzzo, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning at the Pilgrim House Rehab & Skilled Nursing Center, Peabody. Born in Salem, he was the son to the late Salvatore and Santa (Uccello) Merluzzo. He graduated from Salem High School, Class of 1937, and lived there many years. Mr. Merluzzo was with the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) working in Colorado after high school in the 1930’s. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was assigned to Submarine Division. He then served in the Merchant Marine for a number of years after World War II. He worked for several leather companies in Peabody before retiring early with a disability. Gus was involved in several veterans groups including the Submarine Vets Marblehead Chapter, the Commanders Club of the Disabled Veterans, Chapter 100 of Peabody, and the Holland Club which consists of Navy veterans who were commissioned on submarines. He was also a former member of the Italian-American Club of Peabody. He is survived by: one son, Barry & his wife Joanne Merluzzo of Peabody; two daughters, Marian “Kitty” Merluzzo & her companion Jim McCarthy of Peabody and Miriam “Mime” & her husband Robert Cuoco of NH; a step-son, Bruce E. Criswell of Amesbury; one brother, Joseph Merluzzo of Skylerville, NY; two sisters, Paulina Rosenberg and Mildred Redikan both of Salem; 6 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death, besides his parents and wife, by a son Paul Brian Merluzzo, and a grandson Brian Merluzzo. A private Funeral Ceremony will be held on Friday in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, Peabody and burial with Military Honors at Cemetery.
