Obituary of John Manuel Mendonca

John Manuel Mendonca PEABODY John Manuel Mendonca, 53, beloved husband of Ellen (Goodwin) Mendonca, died suddenly and unexpectedly at the Salem Hospital on Saturday morning after being stricken launching his boat into Danversport. Born in the village of Praia-Fenais, in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of Manuel Ataides and Anna Clemente (Nunes) Mendonca. He lived there in his youth, and emigrated to the United States at the age of fifteen (15). He lived in Peabody for the last 38 years. Mr. Mendonca had a great gift of creating and building as a craft, utilizing his skills as a Carpenter, heavy-equipment operator, and building site prep work into a career where he was a Foreman. He recently worked with Dibiase Construction, and was formerly with Tony Pacillo Constuction. He also served as an Independent Contractor. He loved the ocean, and enjoyed time spent on his boat and lobstering. He was a man who valued his family and friends and always maintained his generous spirit. He also enjoyed gardening. He is survived by: his wife, Ellen (Goodwin) Mendonca of Peabody, with whom he spent 36 years of marriage; a son, John M. Mendonca, Jr. of Peabody; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa & Paul de Luccia of Athol; his parents, Manuel Ataides and Anna Clemente Nunes Mendonca of Graciosa, Azores, Portugal; two grandchildren, John da Luccia and Lillyanna de Luccia, both of Athol; two brothers, Mark & Linda Mendonca of Peabody and Danny Mendonca of Danvers; three sisters, Maria & Leonel Policarpo and Anna & Manuel Cerqueira, both of Peabody, and Lucia & Augustino Silva of Portugal; two sisters-in-law, Diane Goodwin of Peabody and Sheila & David Isbell of Maine; a brother-in-law, Michael & Rosanne Goodwin of Peabody; a father-in-law, Ronald E. Goodwin of CO and mother-in-law, Mary Ellen Goodwin of Peabody; and many loving nieces and nephews Relatives and friends are kindly invited to his funeral which will be held on Wednesday at 8 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut ST location, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 AM in St. John’ s Church, Peabody. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 PM. Burial in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Salem
