Obituary of George A. King

George A. King SALEM—George A. King, 82, beloved husband of Ethel “Stephanie” (Berdge) King of Salem, died peacefully at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers following a brief illness. Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late Frederick and Charlotte (McDonald) King. He lived there in his youth and attended Peabody schools. He felt gratitude, and performed his patriotic duty enlisting in the U.S. Army during peacetime between World War II and the Korean War. He remained in the Army Reserves during the Korean War. Mr. King worked in the leather manufacting industry for his long career. He was mostly with Hawthorne Tanning of Salem for many years, and his last 10 years worked at Rex Tanning from where he retired. George was devoted in his faith, and was very active at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Peabody where he served as an Acolyte, and Usher until this Spring when his illness this year. He was a member of the A.O.H. in Salem, and will be remembered mostly as a quiet man who enjoyed being at home as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He is survived by: his wife, Ethel “Stephanie” (Berdge) King of Salem, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage; a son, George King of Peabody; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Christine King of Peabody, Kathleen & Leo LaPointe of Newton, NH, and Dianne & Steven Doody of Plymouth, MA; eight grandchildren and three step-grandchildren, Keith Szymkowski King, Kevin Szymkowski King, and Brittany Szymkowski King, Nicole Lally, Veronica LaPointe, Nicholas LaPointe, and Mary LaPointe, Richard McDonald, Stephanie Glenn, Seth Doody, and Monica Doody; one great-grandson, Coby Glenn; six brothers, William King, Arthur King, Donald King, Frederick King, Ronald King, and Allen King; one sister, Elizabeth Retchetnuk, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death, besides his parents, by a brother Edward Hutchinson. His funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:30 A.M. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. facility, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Service at 10:30 A.M. in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. A visitation will be held on Friday from 4 – 7 P.M. Cremation will follow the ceremony. Memorial donations may be made to the Kaplan Family Hospice House, c/o Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
