Obituary of Zygmunt Szalkowski

Zygmunt Szalkowski, 81, of Peabody, died Tuesday morning at the Kaplan family Hospice House in Danvers following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Marianna (Korzeniawska) Szalkowski with whom he shared over 62 years of marriage. Born in Poland, he was the son of the late John and Peligia Szalkowski. He was raised and educated in Poland and in 1959 he immigrated to the United States with his family and has been a resident of Peabody ever since. Zygmunt first worked at the former AC Lawrence Company and later worked an additional 15 years as a technician for Eastman Kodak in Peabody before finally retiring a few years ago. Zygmunt enjoyed playing the accordion, dancing, holiday celebrations, and his trips to Poland. He also enjoyed gardening and was a handyman around the home, and was an avid Red Sox fan as well. Besides his loving wife of 62 years, he is survived by six daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara Mendonsa of Danvers, Teresa and Louis Pepe of Canton, Yadzia Szalkowski and her husband John Tourtillott of Peabody, Mary Rodrigues of Whitefield, NH, Irene and Jeff Boudreault of Peabody, and Christine and James Marshall of Rockport, she is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, Jennifer, Andrew, Adam, Christopher, Anthony, Krystina, Nicholas, David, Stephen, Kathryn, Nicole, Andrea, and Matthew, a great grand daughter, Lily, and is also survived by several nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Church, Salem to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
