Obituary of Anthony "Tony" Canatselos

Anthony “Tony” Canatselos PEABODY—Anthony “Tony” Canatselos, beloved husband of the late Mary (Patsiaris) Canatselos, died early Monday morning following a brief illness. Born on the beautiful island of Evia, Greece, he was the son of the late George and Angeliki (Agelou) Canatselos. He spent the majority of his childhood in Greece while having a brief stay in Vermont prior to returning to live in Greece in 1939. After serving in the Greek Army post World War II, he returned to the U.S. where he settled in Wakefield in 1954. He has lived in Peabody for the last 40 years. Mr. Canatselos worked in his father’s restaurants at the “Terminal Spa” in Wakefield, and in Peabody. He was also employed at Transitron in Wakefield and in Melrose, before working for EG&G in Salem for many years retiring in 1993. He was a member of the Masons and the St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church. Tony was very artistic and loved painting, sketching, glass blowing, and also enjoyed boating where he was as an active member of the Salem Willows Yacht Club for many years. He was also very proud of becoming a United States Citizen. He loved gatherings with family and friends, and especially cherished time spent with his beloved daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. His passion for life, family and friends will be sorely missed. He is survived by: daughter and son-in-law, Chrisa Canatselos & Bill Coughlin; three grandchildren, Beverly Underwood, Nickolette Canatselos and Georgina Canatselos; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles & his wife Anna Canatselos; sister-in-laws Vassy Helas, Elene Petrovitsis, Rose Patsiaris, brother-in-law Thomas Kanarellis, family friend Susan Coughlin and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death, besides his wife and his parents, by a son George Canatselos, and brother James & his wife Julia Canatselos, sister-in-law Georgia Kanarellis; brother-in laws James Petrovisis, Manuel Patsiaris, and John Helas. Donations can be made to the LAM Foundation, or to the American Liver Foundation, 88 Winchester St., Newton, MA 02461. A visitation will be held tonight (Thursday) from 5 – 8 P.M. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody. Friends and relatives are invited to gather on Friday October 22, 2010 at 10 AM from the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Service at 11 AM in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
