Obituary of Edward Graham Mossman
Edward Graham Mossman, 89 of Peabody, died on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at the JRC, Aviv Centers for Living, in Swampscott.
Mr. Mossman was born on April 19, 1921, in Marshalltown, IA, and was the son of Claude and Marie Mossman. He grew up on a farm and worked as a fireman on the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad after graduating from High School in Dows, IA.
During WWII, he served in the United States Coast Guard aboard the USS Wakefield as a fireman, and made 23 round- trips in the Atlantic theater. From April 13, 1944 to February 1, 1946, Wakefield transported 110,563 troops to Europe and brought some 106,674 men back to America-a total of 217,237 passengers. The average round-trip voyage took 18 days.
In 1946, he married Agnes McLaughlin of Saugus, MA, a Registered Nurse who he met while a patient at the Brighton Marine Hospital. They eventually settled in Peabody, MA. Agnes preceded him in repose in 1995.
Mr. Mossman worked in automobile sales on the North Shore for many years and made many friends during his career. He delighted in his family who will miss him. He leaves his children, Michael and Donna Mossman of Englewood, FL, Harry and Ellen Oulundsen of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Patricia Mossman of Danvers, MA, and Karen LeBro of Peabody, MA. In addition, he leaves his seven grandchildren, Dr. Michelle Mossman Bair of Lubbock, TX, Daniel Mossman of Navarre, FL, Meg Oulundsen Hammer and Bridget Oulundsen Caron of Ponte Vedra, FL, Maura Barry and Colleen Barry of Peabody, MA, and Alexa LeBro of Lynn, MA. He also leaves one great granddaughter, Stella Maris Hammer of Ponte Vedra, FL.
In later years he suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and he was cared for with great dignity and respect by the wonderful staff at the JRC, Aviv Centers for Living, in Swampscott, MA.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn Street, Peabody. The family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Aviv Foundation, 330 Paradise Rd., Swampscott, MA 01907 or www.avivliving.org . A committal of ashes will be held at the families’ convenience.
