Obituary of Jino J. D'Alessandro

Jino J. D'Alessandro, 97, passed away on Saturday, October 23. He was born on February 16, 1913, in Lynn, MA to Marianna Tenaglia and Filandro D'Alessandro from the Abbruzze region of Italy. He graduated from Lynn Classical High School. Jino was a devoted husband and father, and a man with a strong sense of duty and honor who served in two wars, and a man of faith. He attended Lowell Institute where he studied electronics. And in 1936 he joined the U. S. Marines and was sent to Officer Candidate School. While stationed in Quantico, Virginia he met Eileen Ryan, an attractive Navy nurse from Minnesota, and six months later they married on January 29, 1944. Two weeks later he shipped out to the Pacific while Eileen returned to Minnesota to be with family and await the birth of their first born son. Jino and Eileen had nine children born in six different states. His final tour of duty was back in New England and in 1965 he retired at the rank of Full Colonel after thirty years of service. He then began his second career in education. After earning his Masters degree at Salem State College he taught at North Shore Community College for seventeen years as a math professor. Jino placed a high valued on education and was proud to have put all his nine children through college; several of them went on to earn advanced degrees. Upon retirement from teaching Jino and Eileen enjoyed traveling extensively throughout Europe and Asia, and as a vivid story teller, he delighted in describing his experiences. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, and when not visiting with his extensive family, he volunteered with several local agencies. He is pre deceased by his five siblings: Concetta, Evelyn, Viola, Eva, and Henry. He is also pre deceased by his daughter Joan Steffens of Peabody, MA. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Eileen, and eight children and their spouses: James and Elaine of Manchester, NH, Bob and Maureen of Danvers MA, Edward of Salem MA, Michael and Mary of S. Hadley, MA, Mary and partner Joanne Harris of Southwest Harbor, ME, Ned Steffens, and Anne and Mark Tomchik, all of Peabody, MA, Cathy and Steve Eastburg of California, MD, and Margie and Frank Carber of Springfield, VA. He is also survived by his adoring 23 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
