Obituary of Jadwiga (Sobieraj) Zak
. Jadwiga (Sobieraj) Zak, 85, of Peabody passed away early Wednesday morning at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of Jan Zak with whom she shared over 61 years of marriage.
She was born on June 16, 1925 in Starachowice, Poland to Jan and Antonina (Bembas) Sobieraj. She attended polish schools and worked on the family farm. At the start of World War II, she and her sister were displaced to the German Labor Camps near Oldenberg. After the war, she spent time in the refugee camps performing various agricultural work. She met her future husband here when he was part of the occupation army.
She immigrated to England on a work visa, working in the textile industry. She later married in November of 1949 in Manchester, England. Three years later her son was born here in 1952.
In 1954, she traveled to the United States and settled in Peabody and later in 1961 she received her citizenship. While living in Peabody, she worked for many years as an assembler at the CBS Hytron in Danvers.
Jadwiga was a devoted and loving mother, wife, and grandmother. Her hobbies were sewing, gardening, reading, cooking, cracking jokes and her little grand dog, Gus.
Besides her loving husband of 61 years, she is survived by her son Henry Zak of Peabody, her daughter, Teresa Zak of Peabody, a daughter-in-law, Laurie Fontaine of Peabody, a step brother, Stanley of Starachowice, Poland, her granddaughters, Amanda Zak and her companion Vincent Cinserulli of Peabody and Christine Zak and her companion Samantha Soucie of Peabody. She was predeceased by her brother Walter Sobieraj, sister, Maria Tomczak, step sisters Genowefa Sobieraj and Helen Izak.
Her funeral service will be held on Monday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 3:00 until 7:00 PM. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
