Obituary of Lillian E. (Somers) Tyner

Lillian E. Tyner, 82, of Peabody, died Saturday evening at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers following a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of Charles R. Tyner, Jr. with whom she shared over 63 years of marriage. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Amy (Fullerton) Somers. She was raised and educated in the Metropolitan Boston Area and has been living in Peabody for the past 52 years. During World War II, she worked in the Defense Plant in East Boston and later while living in Peabody, she worked as a crossing guard for the city for over 28 years before retiring. For the past 15 plus years, the most rewarding and meaningful experience was volunteering and doing the cooking for all the volunteers and workers, which they thoroughly enjoyed, at the Haven from Hunger in Peabody, where she was affectionately known as mother of the Haven. Lillian was an avid bingo player who enjoyed playing at the Knights of Columbus Hall and St. Michael’s Hall, both in Peabody. She also enjoyed traveling to the Foxwoods Casino’s, watching the game show network and crocheting. Besides her beloved husband Charles, she is survived by her loving children, Charles R Tyner, III and his wife Mary of Bradenton, FL., Lillian E. Birmingham of Peabody, Cheryl A. Cowper-Tyner and her former husband Ronald Cowper of Maine, and Joyce M. and her husband Tony Crisostomo of Peabody, her three sisters, Eileen Stasio of Winthrop, Amy DesJardins and Louise Kennison, both of Peabody, 10 grandchildren, a great grandchild, Elijah, her special friend Linda Friedman of Saugus, and also by several nieces, nephews, and the family dog, Emily. She was the sister of the late James and John Somers, Florence O’Brien, Ruth Lutz, and Lorraine Blanchard, and mother-in-law of the late Austin Frank Birmingham. Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St.,. Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Adelaide’s Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. One of Lillian’s favorite past-time was scratch tickets and if friends should desire, they can donate a scratch ticket in her memory to the family and all winning proceeds will be donated to the Haven from Hunger or in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Haven from Hunger, 71 Wallis St., Peabody, MA 01960
