Obituary of Ellen (Lear) Bettencourt

Ellen (Lear) Bettencourt, 94, of Danvers and formerly of Peabody, died peacefully Tuesday at the Cedar Glenn Nursing Home in Danvers. She was the devoted wife of the late Manuel Bettencourt. She was born in Lynn, MA on February 8, 1916, the daughter of the late Amos and Mary (O’Brien) Lear and had resided in Salem during her childhood. She later moved to Danvers where she graduated from Danvers High School in 1934. She had resided in Peabody for many years before moving back to Danvers. Ellen was first employed at the former Parker Brothers Games in Salem and later at the Breed Shoe Company in Lynn. She then became a sales clerk at Filene’s Department Store at the North Shore Mall in Peabody for 25 years prior to her retirement in 1978. She loved to cook and have her family over for Sunday Dinners. While living at the Tannery 11 Building in Peabody she use to meet everyday at 2:00 pm to socialize with her lady friends.She enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots on television and was grateful for all the blessings that had come to her especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren and great great grandson. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Retired Peabody Police Captain Richard M. Bettencourt and his wife Lorraine of Peabody, a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia A. Thompson and her husband John of Manchester, NH,, four grandchildren, Richard M. And Timothy J. Bettencourt, and Scott M and Robert T. Thompson, seven great grandchildren , a great great grandson, and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Edward, John, William and Gertrude Lear, and Mary Enos. A Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 2, 2011 from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. Her funeral will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at the Funeral Home. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
