Obituary of Aristides Soares Bettencourt

Aristides Soares Bettencourt, 78, of Peabody, died peacefully early Sunday morning at his home with his family by his side after a long illness. He was the devoted husband of 46 years to Aurea (Tavares) Bettencourt. He was born in Gracioza, Azores, Portugal on July 15, 1932, the son of the late Manuel Lino and Zulmira P. (Santos) Bettencourt and had resided there before moving to Brazil in 1950. He immigrated to Massachusetts in 1966 where he has resided for the past 44 years. He had been employed at the Osram Sylvania Plant on Loring Ave. in Salem for 23 years prior to a disability retirement 21 years ago. Aristides enjoyed going salt water fishing and loved to grow vegetables in his garden. He also liked growing flowers and his cherished endeavor was helping seeing his children and grandchildren grow into maturity. Surviving him besides his wife are a son and daughter-n-law, Antonio and Valerie Bettencourt of Peabody, four daughters and a son-in-law, Christiane and Robert Gallant of Salem, Claudia Bettencourt of Marblehead, Celeste and Cynthia Bettencourt both of Peabody, two sisters, Alice M. Bettencourt of Danvers and Maria Espinola of California, two grandchildren, Marco and Serena Bettencourt of Peabody and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Manuel S. Bettencourt. A Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. His funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:00 am from the Funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Peabody/Salem line at 10:00 AM.
