Obituary of Vincent "Jim" Oliva

Vincent “Jim” Oliva, 90, of Peabody and formerly of East Boston, died Friday morning at Union Hospital in Lynn following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Laura (Johnson) Oliva and the late Sabina (DeFeo) Oliva. Born in Italy, he was the son of the late Carmen and Antonetta (Guanci) Oliva. At age 9, Jim immigrated with his family to the United States and settled in East Boston. He attended East Boston Schools and was a graduate of East Boston High School. He has lived in Peabody for the past 20 years. After high school, Jim enlisted with the United States Army Air Force and served during World War II. After the War he re-enlisted with the United States Navy and served in the Navy Reserve for 22 years, and was a member of the Freight Reserve Association. Jim also attended the New England Aircraft School and would later serve as a Lead Mechanic, first with Northeast Airlines and later with Delta Airlines. He worked for over 40 years in the field before retiring in 1984. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time at the Peabody Life Community Center. Besides his wife Laura, Jim is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Vincent and Sandra Oliva of Tewksbury, a daughter and son-in-law, Antonetta “Annette” and Anthony Correnti of Peabody, a brother, Sam Oliva of East Boston, a sister and brother-in-law, Carmella “Millie” and George Manfra of Middleton, and is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and by several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Frank Oliva. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 8:30 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Adelaide’s Church, Lowell St., Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Arthritis Foundation, 29 Crafts St., Suite 450, Newton, MA 02158-1287.
