Obituary of Carol (Hawes) Merrow

Carol (Hawes) Merrow, R.N., 82, of Peabody died Wednesday morning at the Radius Healthcare Center on Liberty St., Danvers following a long illness. She was the wife of the late, Herbert E. Bud Merrow, former President of Griffin & Merrow Plumbing of Peabody. She was born in Quincy, Ma. on December 20, 1920, the daughter of the late Loring R. and Lida Victoria (Patrickan) Hawes. She moved to Peabody in her youth and was a graduate of Peabody High School in 1939. She then entered Mass. Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Boston where she received her degree as an R.N. and worked there for a year. In 1943 , she joined the U.S. Navy with the Nursing Corps and Served for 3 years retiring as a Lt. Jg. in 1946. In her youth, she was a member of the Girl Scouts and received the highest award, the eaglet award . She was an active Member of the community helping with the American Red Cross and was the 1 millionth person to receive the Life Saving Certificate from the Red Cross. She also was active in the South Congregational Church, the Rotary-Anns of Peabody and served as a girl Scout leader in Peabody. She is survived by a son Loring Merrow and his wife Joanna Liss of Beverly, a daughter, Sherry Merrow and her husband, John Spano of Peabody, a sister, Jane Moriarty of Amherst, N.H.; 2 grandchildren, Max and Carolina Merrow of Beverly and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday at 4:00 P.M. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 12 Chestnut St., Peabody facility. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours on Sunday prior to the service from 2:00 - 4:00 P.M. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Red Cross, 85 Lowell St., Peabody, Ma. 01960 in her memory.
