Obituary of Donald Smith

Donald Smith PEABODY—Donald Smith, 81, beloved husband of Eleanore (Theobald) Smith of Peabody, died peacefully Friday morning at his home, with the comforting presence of his family by his side. Born in Northampton, MA, he was the son of the late Ernest G. Smith and Dorothy (Dunning) Smith Soini. He lived there a few years, and grew up in Rockport where he attended schools and graduated from Rockport High School. He lived in Peabody for the last 49 years. He enlisted into the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was especially gifted as a photographer and was assigned to the Pentagon during the war. Mr. Smith was employed in the early days of refrigeration and air conditioning. He started in repair, and developed his skills as an Engineer, Designer and Sales of what was to become the HVAC field for several companies before retiring over 15 years ago. Don loved sailing, and raced 23 foot International Star Class vessels. He was an avid golfer, and a member at the Thomson Country Club in North Reading for nearly 40 years. He also enjoyed building models, was a Marksman and Life Member of the NRA, enjoyed swimming and was on the Swim Team with the U.S. Air Force, and was quite handy around the house using his carpentry skills to renovate when needed. He applied those gifts as he operated a Custom-built and Golf Club Repair business in the 1970’s. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and as a dedicated and devoted family man. He is survived by: his wife, Eleanore (Theobald) Smith of Peabody, with whom he shared 51 years of marriage; two sons, Stephen C. Smith and Craig E. & his wife Stephanie Smith all of Peabody; two grandsons, Michael and Eric Smith; his step-mother, Gladys Smith of Rockport; his sister, Margaret Lane of Rockport, and several nieces and nephews. Cremation will be completed, then relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, on Wednesday April 6, 2011 from 4 – 6 P.M. followed by a Funeral Ceremony at 6 PM. Expressions of sympathy may be made to All Care Hospice, 16 City Hall Square, Lynn, MA 01901 in appreciation of their help to the family.
