Obituary of Demetra "Demi" (Anagnostakos) Katsarakes
Demetra “Demi” Katsarakes, 84, of Peabody, and formerly of New York City, died unexpectedly early Tuesday morning at Salem Hospital. She was the devoted wife of the late Nicholas Katsarakes.
Born in the Bronx, New York, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Catherine (Farfaras) Anagnostakos. She was raised and educated in the Bronx and upon her marriage to her husband, moved to Peabody where she has lived for over 47 years.
While living in the Bronx, she worked at her family’s diner in various capacities throughout her childhood. She later worked as an executive secretary for the United States Navy, St. Regis Paper Company in New York and later for 15 years at GTE Sylvania in Danvers before retiring.
Demi loved to cook and was a chef at her family’s restaurant in Middleton, Oliver’s Delicious Food, and was well known for her world famous Baklava. Demi also loved playing bingo, traveling, and crocheting, especially Afghans for special occasions for her family, many friends, and charities. In her later years, she was especially fond of spending precious time with her young grandnieces and nephew while enjoying many activities with them.
She is survived by her loving son, George Katsarakes of Groveland, her sister, Helen Vezeris of Annapolis, MD, and by numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and God Children. She was the sister of the late Professor Nicholas Anagnostakos.
Her funeral will be held on Monday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by Funeral Services at 10:00 AM at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Paleologos St., Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours for Demi will be held on Sunday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the St. Vasilios Handicapped Elevator Fund, 7 Paleologos St., Peabody, MA 01960.
