Obituary of Barbara Jean (Hagan) Spofford

Barbara Jean (Hagan) Spofford, 83, of Peabody and formerly of Salem, died early Tuesday morning at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, following a long illness. She was the devoted wife of the late Edwin Keith Spofford, Sr. Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Peter James Hagan II and Margaret A (Dragon) Hagan. She was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Salem High School. She has lived in Peabody for the past 56 years. Barbara was a secretary at the former United Shoe in Beverly and upon marrying her husband Edwin, she dedicated her self to raising her family and later enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren and their endeavors. Barbara loved children of all ages and was the matriarch of her family and her neighborhood. She was an avid reader, loved gardening and tending to her flowers and was old movie buff. She is survived by her loving family including her sons Keith Spofford Jr, of Peabody and Peabody Firefighter, John Peter Spofford of Salem, her daughters, Kathleen Worth of Salem, Diane and her husband Peter O’Connor of Peabody, and Joanne Akre and her long time companion Thomas Papa, both of Peabody, her brother, Peter J. Hagan, Jr. and his wife Barbara of Hamilton, and her sister Kathleen A. Hagan of Peabody, and is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be held on Friday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church, 140 Lynn St., Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
