Obituary of Police Capt John J. "Jack" Sweeney
Peabody Police Capt. John J. “Jack” Sweeney, Ret.
PEABODY—Retired Peabody Police Captain John J. “Jack” Sweeney, 67, formerly of Peabody and lately of Gloucester, beloved husband of Glorinda (Eiro) Sweeney, died peacefully Saturday evening with the comforting presence of his family by his side, at his home in Gloucester.
Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late John J. and Esther (Horrigan) Sweeney. He grew up there and lived most of his life there, moving to Gloucester where he lived for the last seven years. He graduated from Peabody High School, then from the University of Lowell. He later earned a Masters degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College.
He served a patriotic duty in the U.S. Army Reserves, and dedicated his life with civic duty to the City of Peabody.
Mr. Sweeney enjoyed a 41 year career with the City of Peabody Police Department. He started as a Patrolman in 1966 walking a beat, worked his way up the ranks to Captain. He retired as Captain of the Criminal Investigation Division in 2008.
He enjoyed golf, was an avid reader, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Leo Council 508 of Peabody, and mostly enjoyed the ocean. He enjoyed sailing, and racing his boat Serendipity. He was a member of the Palmer Cove Yacht Club, and served as Treasurer for eight years. Jack and his family enjoyed many sailing adventures both along the Maine coast and out to Cape Cod and the Islands. This was special since he loved spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren. He will be remembered as a dedicated, devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who served people and the city with honor and dedication.
He is survived by his wife, Glorinda (Eiro) Sweeney of Gloucester, with whom he shared 44 years of marriage; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John & Katherine Sweeney of Arlington and Richard Sweeney of Treasure Island, FL; a daughter and son-in-law, Eileen & Paul Masiero of Richmond, MA; four grandchildren, Isabella, Cole and Hannah Masiero of Richmond, and Emma Sweeney of Arlington; a sister, Mary Jo & her husband Richard Dussault of Topsfield; his mother-in-law Luiza Eiro of Peabody; two sisters-in-law, Virginia & her husband Anibal Faria and Lourdes Eiro all of Ipswich, and several nieces and nephews.
