Obituary of George J. Conrad
George J. Conrad, 89, of Peabody, husband of Maureen C. (Martin) Conrad, died on Monday, May 02, 2011 with his family at his side at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers.
Mr. Conrad was born in Lynn on August 20, 1921 son of George “Connie” and Mary “Celia” (McCarthy) Conrad. He was raised in Lynn and graduated from Lynn English High School Class of 1938. In 1951, he moved from Lynn to Peabody.
Following his graduation from High School, Mr. Conrad began his working career as a tool maker at General Electric in Lynn. On April 20, 1944 he was inducted into the United States Navy and served as an Aviation Electronic Technician’s Mate Second Class, and was Honorably Discharged on May 19, 1946. He then returned to GE as a manufacturing engineer at the West Lynn Instrument Division, retiring in 1985 following 45 years of dedicated employment. While at General Electric, George pursued his education in the GE’s apprentice graduate course at MIT and Northeastern University.
Mr. Conrad was a loving father who devoted his life creating a home for his family. Later, he was so proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments. Another proud moment was the arrival of his great grandson. He was a member of the GE Apprentice Alumni and the Spark Plugs.
In addition to his wife Maureen with whom he shared 61 years of marriage, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Maureen Conrad Delpero and Richard of Peabody, and their children Ryan and D’yana; Liane Conrad of Peabody; Gail Conrad Desmond and Jack of Peabody and their children Rebecca and her husband Greg, Jesse, Jordan and Christopher Timothy; Michael Conrad and Kristin Mackert of VA and his children Taylor and Joseph; Patrick Conrad and Darlene of Peabody and their children Tyler, Madison and Shaun; a great grandson, Kane Wojick; a sister, Gloria Cragin of CA, and many nieces and nephews. His grandson Christopher Michael Desmond and a brother Robert Conrad predeceased him.
His funeral will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 9 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Ann Church, 140 Lynn St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Wednesday, May 4, 2011 from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in George’s name to the Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty St., Danvers, MA 01923 or to Hospice of the North Shore and Greater Boston, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
