Obituary of Maria Jose Alves

Maria José Alves, 89, of Peabody, died Saturday afternoon at the Peabody Glen Nursing Home following a long illness. She was the devoted wife of the late Francisco Alves. Born in Mourilhe, Portugal, she was the daughter of the Virgilio and Ana Joaquina (Pires) Flambo. She was raised and educated in Portugal and in 1969; she immigrated with her family to the United States and has been a resident of Peabody for the past 42 years. While living in Portugal, Maria worked on her family farm which helped sustain the family with fruits and vegetables. While living in Peabody, she worked as an assembler for many manufacturing companies on the North Shore, including the Ideal Baby Shoe Company in Danvers. Maria enjoyed crocheting and quilting and loved her church, Our Lady of Fatima, but most of all, loved being with her family and friends. She is survived by her ten loving children, Arminda O’Sousa of Peabody, Domingos Alves of Spain, Joaquim Alves of Spain, Armindo Alves of Portugal, Maria do Ceu Duarte of France, Antonio Alves of Peabody, Mario Alves of Salisbury, the late Adelia Alves, Ana Maria Alves of Beverly, and Teresa Fatima Cardoso of Londonderry, NH, and is also survived by 37 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was the sister of four late brothers and a sister. Her funeral service will be held on Thursday at 8:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
