Michael Drougas
PEABODY—Michael Drougas, 84, beloved husband of Despina (Tsonis) Drougas of Peabody, passed away early Monday morning at the North Shore Medical Center—Union Hospital in Lynn after a brief illness.
Born in Kalamata, Greece in 1926, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Angeliki (Gellepi) Drougas. He grew up there, and lived in Nazi occupied Greece during World War II. After the war, he served in the Greek Navy for eight years aboard the heavy cruiser Giorgios Averof, and fought against the Communist take over attempt of Greece.
He was married in 1953, and immigrated to the United States, making Peabody his home. He lived in here for the last 58 years.
Mr. Drougas was self-employed businessman, painter and contractor for many years.
Mike embraced America and became a US Citizen. Also, he was a member of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Peabody for years.
He is survived by his wife, Despina (Tsonis) Drougas of Peabody, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage; their four children, son Nickolas of Peabody, daughter Angeline (Kiki) & her husband Robert Benoit of North Quincy, son Arthur & his wife Kim Sullivan of Danvers, and son Demosthenes (Demo) & his wife Carmela of New Fairfield, CT; two grandchildren, Despina Drougas and Bianca Drougas, both of CT, two brothers, Peter and Gregory Drougas, both of Greece; three sisters, Kalliroy Pachis of Toronto, Canada, Maria Athanosopoulos and Dorothea Pappaspiropoulos both of Athens, Greece; and brothers-in-law, Leo Tsonis and James Tsonis both of Peabody and Charles Tsonis of Athens, Greece, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Aristedes Drougas.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Thursday June 2, 2011 at 10 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Service at 11 AM in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 – 8 P.M. in the funeral home. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
