Obituary of Robert B. Maguire

Robert B. Maguire, Sr. PEABODY—Robert Bernard Maguire, Sr., 91, beloved husband of Angela C. (Skurski) Maguire, passed away peacefully in the comforting presence of his family at the Rosewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Peabody on Thursday, July 14, 2011. Born on June 7, 1920 in Salem, MA, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Margaret E. “Bess” (McGrath) Maguire and brother of the late Helen M. (Maguire) Zegarowski. He grew up in the Odell Square neighborhood in Salem, and was educated at St. James Grammar School in Salem class of 1934, and St. Mary’s Boy’s High School in Lynn class of 1939. Bob served a patriotic duty in the U.S. Army. Before heading overseas for WW II, he married his dearest Angela when she was 17 and he was 22 years of age. Corporal Maguire was part of the Battery C 749 Anti-aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion. The Battalion landed on the beaches of Normandy in the summer of 1944 and was also in the Battle of the Bulge in the Winter of 1944 taking part in the liberation of France. He saw action in Iceland, U.K. France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland and Germany and was decorated with the European-African-Middle East Campaign Medal and Ribbon with 4 Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, WW II Victory Medal and Ribbon. Mr. Maguire began his career with the Boston & Maine Railroad. He later was employed with the U.S. Postal Service at the Salem Post Office before retiring at the age of 70. In retirement, he was an activist for ECCO which helped establish a Family Health Center in Salem. Robert was a regular at The Diner in Peabody and the Pilgrim Diner in Salem, where he was known as “Handsome Bob” and “Burnt Bacon Bob”. Bob and Angie were regular Bingo players at St. James Church and the Knights of Columbus. Bob is survived by his wife, Angela C. (Skurski) Maguire of Peabody, with whom he shared nearly 69 years of marriage; four sons, Robert B. Maguire, Jr. of Beverly, Richard B. Maguire, Scott J. Maguire and Shawn F. Maguire, all of Peabody; a granddaughter, Kimberly A. Maguire of Sanford, ME; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Mello of Peabody, and many nieces, nephews, and their extended family. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend his funeral held on Tuesday at 9 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. James Church, 156 federal St., Salem. A Visitation will be held on Monday from 4 – 8 P.M. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bob’s name to the Maine Special Olympics, 125 John Roberts Road #19, South Portland, ME 04106. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
