Obituary of Bernice "Vicky" Sonsava

PEABODY—Bernice “Vicky” Sonsava, 93, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday August 11, 2011 at the Peabody Glen Healthcare Center in Peabody following a brief illness. Born in Haverhill, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Catherine (Sudol) Sonsava. She grew up there and graduated from Haverhill High School. She later graduated from the Beverly Hospital School of Nursing. Ms. Sonsava was a veteran of two wars. She was in World War II, then also in the Korean War, where she was a Sgt nurse in the WACS. After the war, she was employed at the Mass General Hospital and also Shattuck Hospital in Boston before her career at J.B. Thomas Hospital in Peabody for 27 years until retiring in 1983. Bernice, also known as Vicky, was active at St. John the Baptist Church in Peabody, and was a member of Sodality. She enjoyed quiet gatherings with her family and friends. She is survived by nieces and nephews, including Carole McLaughlin of Danvers, Thomas & his wife Carol McLaughlin of North Ft. Myers, FL, her great-nieces & great-nephews, Kelly Devarenne of Georgetown, Donna Streeter of Groveland, Mark McLaughlin of Westboro, and Lauren McLaughlin of London, England, as well as several other nieces, nephews, and gran-nieces & grand-nephews. She was preceded in death, besides her parents, by a nephew Edward McLaughlin and her siblings, Anna Mc Laughlin, Sophie Sheehan, Michael Sonsava and Peter Sonsava. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Saturday August 13, 2011 from 9:30 – 10:30 AM in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 AM in St. John the Baptist Church, Peabody. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Groveland.
