Obituary of John R McQuillan

John R. McQuillan, 82, of Stuart Florida and formerly of Peabody and Lynn, died unexpectedly Sunday morning at his home in Florida. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Edward and Kathleen (Wellington) McQuillan. He was raised and educated in Lynn and graduated from Lynn English High School in 1948. John was a star pitcher in high school and was drafted by the New York Yankees after high school. Following his stint with the Yankees, John enlisted with the United States Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952. After the war, John worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad as a policeman and retired in 1992 after 30 years at the railroad. John was an avid golfer and was a lifetime member of Gannon Golf Club and the Lynn Knights of Columbus. His is survived by his brothers and sister, William McQuillan of Georgetown, Robert McQuillan of Auburndale, Paul McQuillan of Melrose and Sarah and her husband Paul Goodwin of Peabody, and is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Edward and Joseph McQuillan and was the long time companion of the late Bernice Cross of Lynn. Visiting hours for John will be held on Saturday from 9:00 until 10:30 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Lynn. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to a charity of one’s choice.
