Obituary of Lloyd J. Atkinson

Lloyd J. Atkinson, 82, husband of Ethel M. (Pool) Atkinson of Peabody, died on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Lloyd was born in Peabody on March 4, 1929 son of Lloyd L. and Margaret G. (McMahon) Atkinson. He was raised in Peabody and graduated from Peabody High School Class of 1946 and was a lifelong resident. On June 11, 1946 he enlisted into the U.S. Air Force and served as a Photographer for 18 months on Guam. He attained the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged on June 10, 1949. Lloyd was employed from 1964 as an assembler at the General Electric Company until his retirement. Following his retirement in 1993, Lloyd joined the Cahill-Brodeur Funeral as a funeral assistant and also worked at several North Shore area funeral homes. Lloyd touched his funeral assistant co-workers with his compassion and his great sense of humor. Lloyd was a loving father who devoted his life to creating a home for his family. Following his son Gary’s marriage to Carole, she became the daughter he never had, and later he was so proud of his 3 grandchildren and their accomplishments. Lloyd was an avid golfer who golfed with the Shoe City League and also at the Gannon Golf Course in Lynn. In 1968, he was the President of the Peabody Little League; he also summered with his family at York Beach in Maine and later wintered in Florida. In addition to his wife Ethel with whom he recently celebrated 60 years of marriage, Lloyd is survived by his son and his wife, Gary M. and Carole Atkinson of Reading; 3 grandchildren, Michael, Lee Ann and Karen Atkinson all of Reading; 2 sisters, Audrey Atkinson and Joan Holuk both of Lynn; several nieces, nephews, cousins and his many friends, all of whom will miss him. Lloyd was predeceased by his brothers Ray, Glenn and Wayne Atkinson. His funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
