Obituary of Sister Mary Martina McDonough S.N.D.
Ipswich, December 2, 2011. Sr. Mary Martina McDonough, S.N.D., 89, of Ipswich, died peacefully Friday December 2, 2011 at the Sister of Notre Dame Residence in Ipswich. Sr. Mary was born in Ireland on June 21, 1922, daughter of the late Martin and Catherine (Powell) McDonough. Sr. Mary entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur at Waltham on August 3, 1940 and professed her Perpetual Vows on July 30, 1948. Sister received her Bachelor of Arts from Emmanuel College and Masters in Education from Fordham and University of Manial,MA and her Doctoral Studies were completed at Columbia University. Her ministries were in Boston, Cambridge, Leominster, Ipswich, Hingham and in Okayama, Hiroshima, Tokyo, and Nigata, Japan. Sister is survived by her sister, Helen Eccleston of California, her sister-in-law, Virginia McDonough of Braintree, and by her many Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and by many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Martin, Joseph, Margaret, Thomas, John, and Will Mc Donough and Mary Anne Black. Sister Mary’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday December 7, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Our Lady of Queen Chapel, 30 Jeffrey’s Neck Rd., Ipswich. Relatives and friends may pay their respects at the Sisters of Notre Dame, prior to the Mass on Wednesday from 1:30 until 2:30 PM. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Ipswich. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Sisters of Notre Dame, 30 Jeffrey’s Neck Rd., Ipswich, MA 01938. Arrangements were made by the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody.
