Obituary of Walter E Coombs, Sr

Walter E. Coombs, Sr., 82, of Peabody, died Wednesday afternoon at the Salem Hospital following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Dorothy (Marchand) Coombs. Born in Dorchester, he was the son of the late Eugene and Olive (Arsenault) Coombs. He was raised and educated in Beverly and has lived in Peabody for the past 51 years. Walter worked as a truck driver for HP Hood in Lynn, Charlestown and Beverly for over 47 years before retiring. Walter was a former member of the Knights of Columbus of Lynn and was an avid reader. He also was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed watching all of Boston’s professional sports teams. He is survived by four sons, Walter E. Coombs, Jr., of Danvers, Joseph Coombs of Chandler, AZ, Steven Coombs of Peabody and John Coombs of Newmarket, NH, two brothers, Donald Coombs of Peabody and Earl Coombs of Cary, NC, and is also survived by eleven grandchildren, a great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Mary Conti. A private funeral service will be held on Saturday with burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
