Obituary of Helder M. Avila

Peabody, February 23, 2002. Helder M. Avila, 62, of Canterbury Dr., Peabody, died early Saturday morning at the Life Care Center in Lynn following a brief illness. He was the loving husband of Maria Fatima (Monteiro) Avila with he shared over 37 years of marriage. Born and raised in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Napoleao & Ema (Emilia) Avila. He had lived in Portugal for most of his youth and later had moved to Brazil before immigrating to the United States in 1968 and has been a resident of Peabody ever since. He had worked for Boston University for 28 years as a custodian before his illness a couple of months ago. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, and was a big fan of Soccer in both Portugal and Brazil. He also was a member of the CLC Club in Peabody. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by a son, Marcelo Avila of Beverly; a daughter, Adriane Vieira of Peabody; a brother, Rui Avila of Brazil and a grand daughter, Amanda Vieira of Peabody, and several nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 8:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St., Peabody Facility (978) 531-0398, followed by a funeral Mass in St. John’ s Church, Peabody at 9:00 AM to which relatives and friends are invited to attend.
