Obituary of Frederick "Fred" A. Small

Frederick A. "Fred" Small, 92 years, of Lynn, husband of the late Gladys E. (Pendleton) Small died Wednesday at the Penacook Place Nursing Home in Haverhill after a brief illness. Mr. Small was born July 27, 1909 in Boston, son pf the late Almon H. and Minnie M. (Kingston) Small. He was raised and educated in Lynn graduating from Lynn English High School class of 1926. Following his graduation he apprenticed as a photo engraver. From 1928 to 1939 he was employed by the J. B. Blood Grocery chain as a district manager with duties which entailed opening several branches throughout Massachusetts. He then was employed at the General Electric Riverworks, Bldg. 69 in Lynn retiring in 1975 as a jet engine quality controller. After Mr. Small retired he and his wife made their home in Alton Bay, NH returning to Lynn in 1983. Mr. Small was a Master Mason of the Bethlehem Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Lynn and a member of the G.E. Jet Pioneers and a member of the Quarter Century Club. He was a woodworking artisan and took great pride in building their dream cottage in Alton Bay, he also enjoyed model ship building and carving model doll houses. He is survived by two sons and their wives, Dwight F. and Beverly Small of Lynn and Keith F. and Judy Small of Haverhill; two daughters and their husbands, Gayle P. and Donn Bettinger of Center Harbor, NH and Caryl and John DeBerardinis of Lynn; eleven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Alton, Varril, Herbert and Lillian Small. His funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Cahill-Brodeur facility at 20 Church St., Peabody 978-531-0472 of the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home. The Rev. Russell Davis will officiate. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may pay their respects Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn.
