Obituary of Gerard R. Demeule

Gerard R. Demeule PEABODY—Gerard R. Demeule, 86, beloved husband of the late Nancy (Ames) Demeule, died unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep at his home on Wednesday February 28, 2012. Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Aimee and Marie (Dumas) Demeule. He grew up there and graduated from Salem High School. He lived in Peabody for many years. Mr. Demeule served his patriotic duty by serving in the US Army during World War II. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart from wounds in Czechoslovakia. He was part of the Army Occupation in Japan after the war, and served as temporary Mayor of Nico, Japan. When he married his wife, Nancy, he worked in the family business at A.P. Ames. Even though retired, he continued to be in the Point of View Optical Store owned by his son-in-law. Gerard, who was known as “Blackie”, was a very gifted craftsman. He enjoyed working with wood, and made several furniture pieces. He was skilled in many areas of carpentry including plaster, cabinetry, and masonry. He also enjoyed music, and played the organ at home as he entertained many family and friends at social gatherings. He is survived by his daughters, Susan & her husband Richard Regitano of Peabody and Robin & her husband Robert Werme of CT; nine grandchildren, Michele & her husband Patrick Minogue, Kimberly Kral, Karen & her husband Kevin Rourke, Richard & his wife Gina Regitano, Jr., Kristi Regitano & her fiancée Mark Petitto, Matthew Comfort, Amanda Comfort, Aimee Comfort, and Andrew Comfort; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Cecile Marquis of Beverly; a brother, Wilfred & his wife Rita Demeule of Salem, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death, besides his wife and parents, by a brother Raymond and sisters Yvonne Nelson, and Victoria. A private family Funeral Service was held on Saturday in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home and burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery with Military Honors.
