Obituary of Joaquim J. Alves

Joaquim J. Alves, 75, of Peabody, husband of Aurora (Fernandes) Alves, died Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the Peabody Glen Health Care Center after a four year illness. Mr. Alves was born in Cidadelhe Ponte da Barca Minero, Portugal son of the late Joao Antonio and Irene (Pires) Alves. He was raised and educated in Portugal and served in the Army prior to coming to the United States in 1967. He has been residing in Peabody for 41 years. Mr. Alves was employed for many years as a hot top paver retiring in 1998 from Highway Paving Company in Billerica. He provided a home for his wife and daughter and later was so proud of his 3 cherished grandchildren. Mr. Alves was a handyman who enjoyed repairing and building cabinets, enjoyed working in his vegetable garden, caring for his fruit trees, making wine and traveling to Portugal. He was a member of the Over the Hill Soccer League and also followed the Porto, Benfica and Sporting soccer teams in Peabody. In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by a daughter, Maryellen Alves-Hertigan and her husband David S. of Rowley; 3 grandchildren, Parker Charles, Peighton Frances and Phoebe Paris Hertigan of Rowley; 2 sisters, Olinda Alves and Rosa Alves of Portugal; a brother-in-law, Anibal Nunes of Somerville, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Noemia Alves Nunes, Henrique Alves and Eirminio Alves. Mr. Alves’s family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, 16 Church St. Peabody.
