Obituary of John "Jack" Hopkins

John “Jack” Hopkins, 79, a long-time resident of Peabody, passed away in peace at home on April 3. His wife and two daughters were by his side. Born in Central Woods Harbour, Nova Scotia, Jack was raised in Revere, MA by his parents – the late Cleveland and Vivian Hopkins. He graduated from Revere High School in 1950. He bravely enlisted into the U.S. Navy on Nov. 14, 1952 and served in the Korean War as an MM3 aboard the U.S.S. WASP (CRV 18) prior to being honorably discharged on Nov. 7, 1956. Seeing education as an honor, Jack attended Boston University where he studied Aircraft and Aircraft Engine Maintenance and obtained his Associate’s Degree in 1958. He soon put his skills to the test, opening his own business in Revere, MA – The Marine Engineering and Transmission Co. Inc. in 1970. Jack then went on to a very tenured career as a machinist at the GE Riverworks Plant in Lynn. As he was known there, “Hoppy” retired in 1994 after 17 years of dutiful employment. Until recently, Jack remained active working as a currier at the Freedom Pharmacy in Byfield, MA. In his younger years, Jack was the Secretary and then President of the Broad Sound Tuna Club in Revere, MA. Through-out his life he enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, wood-working, and painting. And while all of these hobbies brought him much happiness over the years, he expressed that his greatest joy came from his 41 years of marriage, the ability to watch his girls grow up, and laughter with his grandchildren. Jack’s patience, kindness, security, and love will be missed by his wife Janet (Gainor) Hopkins of Peabody; daughters Elisha (Hopkins) Ewing of Peterborough, NH and Elizabeth (Hopkins) Moughan of North Andover, MA; son-in-law Joshua Moughan; grandchildren Jack Moughan, Liberty Ewing, and Ty Moughan; siblings Leslie Hopkins, Sylvia & Chet MacDonald, Pauline & Robert Redding; Karen & Paul Munson; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family, and many new and life-long friends. Visiting hours for Jack will be held on Monday, April 9, 2012 from 4 – 8 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. A funeral to celebrate Jack’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 8:45 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, followed by a service at the East Baptist Church, 300 Western Ave., Lynn.
