Obituary of Joao Espinola Mendonca
Joao Espinola Mendonca, 85, of Peabody, died late Saturday evening at Salem Hospital following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Lucinda (Fernandes) Mendonca.
Born and raised in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Manuel E. and Maria Emilia (Medina) Mendonca. He later immigrated to the United States and has been living in Peabody for the past 32 years.
Prior to his retirement many years ago, he had worked in the leather industry in Peabody. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church and a member of the Holy Ghost Society, both in Peabody.
Besides his loving wife, he is survived by 2 sons and daughters-in-law, John and Maria Alice Mendonca of Peabody and Manuel and Lucy Mendonca of Tyngsboro; 4 daughters and 3 sons-in-law, Maria and Manuel Silva, Maria Joao, Rita and John Costa, and Maria Christina and Jose Pavao, all of Peabody; a sister, Christina Mello of Portugal; 11 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was the brother of the late Manuel and Jose E. Mendonca, and Maria Mendonca.
His funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St., Peabody facility, followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody at 10:00 Am to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Salem. Visitation on Monday from 5-9 PM.
