Obituary of Eugene Joseph DeRoo
Eugene R. DeRoo, 77, of West Peabody, died Friday evening at the Beverly Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Mary Elizabeth (Scanlon) DeRoo with whom he shared 52 years of marriage.
He was born in Arlington, Ma on September 18, 1928, the son of the late Walter E. and Adelaide (Muldoon) DeRoo and at the age of 2 after his
Mother’ s death he was placed in the Foster Care program in Springfield, Ma. He was a graduate of Classical High School in Springfield and started working with the Boston and Maine Railroad at the age of 17.
He enlisted in the US Navy as a cook and served as a petty officer 3rd class prior to his discharge. He rejoined working with the B & M Railroad as a Yardmaster for 40 years prior to his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the Rusty Wheels Club of the B&M railroad that met monthly and was also involved and active in the AA program.
He enjoyed gardening and doing repairs for his family.
Surviving him besides his wife are 3 sons and daughter-in-laws, Brian and Lucy DeRoo of Epping, NH, Gary and Judy DeRoo of Saugus, Ma and Mark and Mary A. DeRoo of Topsfield, Ma, a daughter and son-in-law, Patrice and Richard Kerwin of Peabody; 7 grandchildren, Jeremy, John and Heather DeRoo of Epping,NH, Nicholas and Courtney DeRoo of Topsfield and Christopher, Michael and Jillian Kerwin of Peabody and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Philip and Walter DeRoo.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., Peabody location. His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m from the Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Adelaide’ s Church, Lowell St., Peabody at 10:00 AM Burial in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
