May 22, 2012- I remember Jim telling me before he "retired" that he was always excited to come to school. There never was a day he wanted to be somewhere else, needed to be maybe, but not wanted to be. On any given day he taught something to someone. He did this without thinking of intentions, it was just Jim at his best. He respected and accepted people for themselves without putting demands on them. He taught through his actions and by example, not through his words and many of us benefited this. I know I learned many things from him and I was his partner! Jim, I celebrate your life and mourn your passing. You were a very dear friend and I will miss you, but I carry your spirit in my heart. Rest in peace. Sheryl

Jim and his family lived the next street over from us and I went to grammer school and high school with him. We played countless hours of basketball during those years and I enjoyed him tremendously. After we graduated from highschool I would see him perhaps once every ten years or so at a basketball game or simply run into him. We would talk and it never seemed like so many years had passed in fact it was like it was yesterday. This is the type of friendhip that is rare and I feel very fortunate to have experienced it. I dont know his family but I want to extend my sympathy and let you know that Jim touched many lives that I am sure you are not aware of. Dick Lynch

Jim, my friend and buddy.
They say a man's true mark is the reputation he leaves behind. You were the most giving man I have ever known. It's not only what you did for all of us, which is anything, anytime; its the how you did it - with your full heart and your sweet and joyfull personality. While it's true that you didn't have an off button, when the switch was on, it was all for the good. You genuinely wanted to take care of us and would do whatever you could to make sure we were well.
If ever there was a person who was meant to be a teacher, it was Mr G. He was a model for how to conduct yourself.

I watched him umpire baseball games and referee basketball games and get screamed at by parents and kids alike, yet he never sunk to their level. He wasn't a pushover though - he would give it right back to you if you crossed the line. But he had a way of winning people over. He never allowed those arguments to become personal.

I watched him coach junior high basketball and insist that every player be able to play in every game. It often drove people crazy because they wanted to win the games and sometimes the team would lose because he insisted on allowing even the kids who weren't very good, to play in every game. Beyond pee-wee sports, I've never encountered another coach who had the strength of character to insist on that.

When I watched him coach and was coached by him, he made you feel like your well-being was the most important thing, regardless of whatever else was going on around him. He didn't take things overly seriously, and by his example you found yourself doing the same. Once he talked to you, all of a sudden however you messed up on the playing field or the practice court didn't seem like the most important thing of your teenage life, which up until that point, it did.

When he was my 5th grade teacher, we went on a field trip to the Topsfield Fair and I brought a goldfish home. I think it was my first pet. I named it Mr G, in his honor. I was terrible about changing the water in its bowl and the water always looked terrible. Because I was so lazy about changing the water I figured the fish would have a short life. That fish lived more than three years.

I haven't seen Mr G in almost 30 years and yet he has never left my thoughts. Mr G truly was the richest man in town.

Everything that has been said I could also write myself. I heard he was sick a little while ago and I wanted to write him a letter of thanks but I'm sorry to say I didn't finish it in time. Mr. G was my 5th grade teacher at the Burke School in the seventies. It's been over three decades since then and I don't think a year has gone by when I haven't told someone a Mr. G story. My daughter is in the 5th grade now and could tell a story or two herself because she's heard them so many times. He was absolutely one of the best and I hope his family receives some comfort knowing how many people he has touched - especially his sons who I remember from those special days when Mr. G would bring them to school.
