Obituary of Sister Marie Emmanuel Mahoney, SND

Sister Marie Emmanuel Mahoney, SND, of Ipswich, died peacefully June 5, 2012 at the Sisters of Notre Dame Julie Billiart Retirement Center in Ipswich. Sister Marie Emmanuel was born in Salem on August 10, 1923 daughter of the late Matthew P. and Theresa (Coughlin) Mahoney. Sr. Marie Emmanuel entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur at Waltham on August 8, 1944 and professed her Perpetual Vows on July 30, 1952. Sister received her Bachelor of Arts in French and Spanish from Emmanuel College, her Masters in French from Assumption College. Sister pursued her education and received her certification in H.S. Administration and Guidance from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Boston College and Fairfield University; attended Boston University School Administration, Fitchburg State College Workshop in Guidance and Rivier College courses in Scripture and Guidance programs. Her teaching ministries were in West Newton, Brighton, Peabody, Hudson, Tyngsboro, as School Principal in Lawrence, and retiring in 2001 to Ipswich. Sister Marie Emmanuel is survived by her many Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur family; a sister-in-law, Patricia Mahoney of Beverly wife of the late Mathew Mahoney; 4 nephews, Brian Mahoney husband of the late Patricia Mahoney and his sons, Whelan and Kyle; Michael and his wife Elizabeth Mahoney and their deceased daughter Caitlyn; Brother David Mahoney, CFX of Kenya; John Mahoney and his son Mathew and daughter Kelly. Sister Marie Emmanuel’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 8, 2012 at 3 p.m. at Our Lady Queen Chapel, 30 Jeffreys Neck Rd., Ipswich. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in Ipswich. A Prayer Service will be held at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Sister Marie Emmanuel’s name to the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, 30 Jeffreys Neck Rd., Ipswich, MA 01938.
