Obituary of Melvin Lee Akers

Melvin L. Akers, 90, of Peabody, died unexpectedly on Tuesday afternoon at the Lahey Clinic in Peabody. He was the beloved husband of Katherine (Scarpone) Akers with whom he shared over 67 years of marriage. Born in Olustee, Oklahoma, he was the son of the late John and Lettie (Garrett) Akers. He has been a resident of Peabody for the past 54 years. He was proud of his Oklahoma background and his part Indian Heritage. He was a veteran of World War II who served with the United States Coast Guard in Greenland, the North Atlantic and in the Mediterian Sea where he lost his ship. He was honorably discharged in August of 1945. He was a member of the VFW Post 1011 in Peabody where he served as Quartermaster for many years and was a member of the DAV in Peabody and served as treasurer. He was also a member of the Masons A.F. & A.M. Jordon Lodge of Peabody. He was a graduate of Bentley College with a degree in accounting and later received his degree in business administration from Northeastern University. He was employed at Eastman Gelatin as an accountant before retiring in 1984. Besides his wife he leaves behind a daughter, Kimberly of Wake Forest, NC, and three grandchildren, Cameron of San Antonio, TX, and Jada and Jordan, both of Raleigh, NC, and is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Don of Olustee, OK., Gene of US Navy, and Ted of Golden, CO., and also is survived by many nieces and nephews. His Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
