Obituary of Walter Magesky
Walter Magesky, 85, of Peabody, a well known retired Peabody Police Officer, died peacefully Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at his residence with his family by his side. He was the devoted husband of Ramona (Cashman) Magesky with whom he recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in May.
Walter was born in Peabody on September 5, 1926, the son of the late Anthony and Sophia (Filipowicz) Magesky and had resided here all his life.
He entered the US Army during WW 11 and served overseas in Italy prior to his discharge in 1946. He was first employed in the leather industry working at the former Verza Tanning Co. Later he was a co-owner of the Gulf Station on Foster St., Peabody and also was employed at the Haskell Lumber Co. of Peabody for many years.
Walter joined the Peabody Police Department in 1957 and served faithfully for 32 years receiving many commendations before his retirement in 1988. He and his wife enjoyed travelling to Las Vegas and spent a few winters in Homosassa Springs, Florida. He had been a member of many clubs and organizations including the Peabody Lodge of Elks, #1409, and the A,O.H, Div. 17, both of Peabody, the Union Club of Beverly, Loyal Order of Moose of Salem, the V.F.W. Post 1011, Peabody, the Emerald Society of Boston, St. Michael’s Society of Peabody and the Polish Club of Danvers. He was a very kind police officer and was known as “Mr. Nice Guy” of the Police Department who helped many people during and after his retirement.
Besides his wife, Ramona, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Peabody Fire fighter Neil and Tricia Magesky of Peabody, two daughters, Sheila Magesky and her companion Wallace Porter of Danvers and Patrice Magesky and her companion David Blake of Peabody, two sisters Josephine Magesky of Peabody and his twin sister Pauline Wojtonik of Derry, NH, his sister-in-laws, Barbara Clifford of Lee NH and Dolores Gibeley of Topsfield, MA, and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Brian Magesky who died last year and the brother of the late Adolph “Ace” Magesky, John Magesky, Stella Magesky, Julia Meaney, Anna Rybinsky and Mary Jean.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 17,2012 from 2:00 until 6:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. His Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM in the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Mem. Park, Peabody.
