Obituary of James A. Mandros
James A. Mandros, 81, beloved husband of Helen (Vasiles) Mandros, died Thursday afternoon at the Brockton Hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Northern Epiros under the nation of Greece, he was the son of the late Arthur and Marina (Iatros) Mandros. He lived there for 17 years, then emigrated to the New York City area of the United States. He soon moved to Worcester where he lived for a short period of time, before moving to Dorchester, and then Peabody, where he lived for 42 years. He lived in Whitman for the last four months.
Mr. Mandros was a veteran of World War II, with service in the United States Army, Company F with the 188th Parachute Infantry Division, the first group to invade Japan.
Following the war, he started his career as a Machinist, working for Keystone Camera as a Tool & Dye maker. He expressed his entrepreneurial spirit as Owner/Operator of The Deli Mart on Main St. in Peabody Square for 16 years. He then completed his working career as a Machinist with General Electric Company in Lynn until his retirement 16 years ago.
Mr. Mandros enjoyed gardening, was a member of the Masons, Jordan Lodge of Peabody, was a longtime member of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, the Peabody V.F.W., the Northern Epiros Society of Boston and the Pindos Epirotic Society of Boston, and served as Past President of both organizations, and enjoyed time with his family and spending the summer in South Yarmouth on Cape Cod.
He is survived by his wife, Helen (Vasiles) Mandros of Whitman, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage; one daughter and son-in-law, Stacey & Kenneth Dowd of Whitman; one granddaughter, Victoria Dowd of Whitman; three brothers, Thomas Mandros of Cocoa Beach, FL, Anton Mandros of Portsmouth, RI, and William Mandros of Parsippany, NJ; two sisters, Athena Tzorros of Greece and Persefone Mandelos of Bayside, NY; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
His funeral will be held on Monday at 11:30 AM from the Conway facility at 12 Chestnut Street of the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Service at 12:30 P.M. in St. Vasilios Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited.
A visitation will be held on Sunday from 4 to 8 P.M at the Conway facility.
Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
