Obituary of Mary E. (MacLeod) Makela

Mary E. (MacLeod) Makela, 92, beloved wife of the late Urho A. Makela, died Saturday afternoon at the Beverly Hospital. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Ernest J. and Mary (Glynn) MacLeod. She lived in Roxbury in her youth. She attended Holy Trinity School, Jamaica Plain High School, and Boston University. She lived in Peabody for the last 65 years. Mrs. Makela was the Director of the City of Peabody School Lunch Program for many years before her retirement. She was an avid golfer, was a member of St. Adelaide’ s Church in West Peabody, a former 4-H Leader for more than 10 years, the Golden Agers of Peabody, and the A.A.R.P. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard & Linda Makela, Robert & Mary Ann Makela, and Ralph & Linda Makela all of Peabody; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary E. & Lon Bonczek of Falmouth and Marjorie & Ronald Liberge of Beverly; 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elna A. Bonnie Ouellet. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9 AM from the Conway facility at 12 Chestnut St. of the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in St. Adelaide’ s Church, Peabody. Relatives and friends kindly invited. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 8 P. Following cremation, urn burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
