Obituary of Stephen J. Hayward

Stephen J. Hayward, 65, of Peabody, died unexpectedly early Saturday Morning, July 28, 2012 at the Lahey Clinic North Medical Center in Peabody after taking an ill turn at his home. He was the husband of Mariellen (Sokolski) Hayward. He was born in Lynn, MA on February 28, 1947, the son of Helen (Zak) Hayward of Peabody and the late Joseph Hayward and was educated and resided in Peabody most of his life. Following his graduation from Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, he entered the US Army during the Vietnam War in 1964 and served in Germany prior to his discharge in 1967. He then enrolled at Northeastern University and was a graduate with a degree in criminal justice. Stephen had been a member of the Danvers Police Department for 32 years before retiring as a police Lieutenant in 2002. While there he received many commendations for his faithful duty. He enjoyed playing golf and was known in the neighborhood as “Mr. Fixit “always helping out with odd jobs and fixing repairs around the house. He liked to travel and go on cruises and enjoyed the role of “Grampy” to his seven cherished grandchildren. Stephen was the former husband of the late Claudia (Mc Mahan) Hayward who died in 1990. He is survived by his wife and mother, both of Peabody, three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Kerry Hayward and Shawn and Jacquelyn Hayward all of Peabody and Matthew and Kimberly Hayward of Exeter, NH, two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Cindy Hayward of Seabrook, NH and Gary and Lori Hayward of Peabody, a sister, Elizabeth Grosiak of Newmarket, NH, his seven grandchildren, Nathan, Patrick, Kyle, Colby, Keira, Kelsey and Alexa Hayward and many nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. There will be a private family service on Wednesday at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
