Obituary of Anthony R. "Tony" Mendes

Anthony R. “Tony” Mendes, 83, a retired Peabody Police Officer, died peacefully Satruday afternoon surrounded by his family at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a brief illness. He was the loving husband of Doris (Augusto) Mendes. He was born in Lowell,MA on February 14, 1929, the son of the late Antonio and Cecelia (Picanco) Mendes and was raised and educated there before moving to Peabodyin 1948. A veteran of WW 11, he served in the US Navy from 1946 until his discharge in December of 1949. Tony joined the Peabody Police Department in 1963 and was a dedicated police officer for 20 years retiring in 1983. He also was a meat cutter for many years at the Tremont Market inPeabody. He received an associated degree from No Shore Community College in 1978. He had been a member of the Portuguese American War Vets, Post 1 of Peabody, the D.A.V. Chapter 100, and the Peabody Police Benevolent Association. Tony enjoyed playing golf at the North Shore Courses and was devoted to caring for all the members of his family. He is survived by his wife, Doris, his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Dorene Mendes of Middleton, a daughter and son-in-law, Corrine and Joseph Cronin of Peabody, a sister, Helen Gonsalves of Hudson, NH, his grandchildren, Jeffrey and his wife Lauren Cronin of Methuen, Cori- Beth and her husband Stephen Mulvey of Peabody, Maura and her husband Stephen Ricardi of Ludlow, MA, and Amelia Mendes of Middleton and her fiancé Corey Erwin of Wakefield,, his two great grandson, Gavin and Mason Cronin of Methuen and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Leo Mendes. A Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St.,Peabody facility. His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10:00AM from the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass in ST. Thomas the Apostle Church, Peabody/Salem line at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery,Peabody.
