Obituary of Lauriano V. Cunha

Lauriano V. Cunha, 84, of Peabody, died Friday afternoon at his home surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Luzia (Picanco) Cunha with whom he shared over 57 years of marriage. Born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Francisco and Violanta (Julia) Cunha. He was raised and educated in Portugal and later immigrated to the United States in 1974 where he settled in Peabody and has lived for the past 38 years. Lauriano lived in Angola, Africa from 1953 until 1968 and worked as a heavy equipment operator, and later became a private business owner. While living in Peabody, he was first employed in the leather industry and later was employed in the fishery industry as a production worker before he finally retired 20 years ago. He enjoyed gardening and making wine and was a long time member of the CLC Club in Peabody. He also enjoyed watching soccer, wrestling and hockey. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Carlos and Ellen Cunha of Haverhill and Victor and James Cunha, both of Peabody, a daughter, Maria Riley of Groveland, a brother, Isidro V. Cunha and a sister, Maria Calminda Julia DaSilva, both of Portugal and is also survived by five grandchildren, Jonathan Cunha, and Aydan, Bryce, Kezya, and Taryn Riley. His funeral service will be held on Monday at 8:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 3:00 until 7:00 PM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
