Obituary of Daniel E. "Dan" McGuiggan

Daniel E. “Dan” McGuiggan PEABODY—Daniel E. “Dan” McGuiggan, 81 years young, of Danvers and formerly of Peabody, passed away on Saturday evening January 12, 2013 at the North Shore Medical Center in Salem while in the comforting presence of those who loved him. Born in Boston, he came into this world with a bang on July 4, 1931. He was the son of the late Daniel and Rosalie (Darling) McGuiggan. He grew up in Jamaica Plain and Dedham. Dan was a 1949 graduate of B.C. High School. After graduating from high school he joined the U.S. Navy where he proudly served his country aboard the USS Mullaney (DD 528) during the Korean War. He was a proud member of the Tin Can Sailors and the National Association of Destroyer Veterans. He enjoyed many re-unions with his fellow servicemen. He married Ruth “Jeannie” Raffo while on leave in 1953. They made their home in Everett and later settled in Peabody. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1954, he attended Northeastern University and graduated with a business administration degree. The majority of Dan’s employment years were as a Food Buyer for the Stop & Shop Company. He was higly regarded for his high standards and integrity by everyone who worked with him. He retired in 1994 with 45 years of dedicated service. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, the V.F.W. Post 1011 and the American Legion of Peabody both of Peabody, and a former Board member on the Moody Beach Association. Dan was a simple man, but was a very unique character with an infectious personality and had quite a zest for life. He was an avid reader, loved playing cribbage, and was a loyal fan of all professional New England sports teams. He was a very active senior who enjoyed many activities at the various Senior Centers in Massachusetts, Maine, and Florida. He enjoyed Summers in Maine and Winters in Florida. He was a devoted husband, caring father, a very proud enthusiastic grandfather supporting his two grandchildren in all their endeavors, and a supportive member of his extended family. His utmost passion was spending time with family and friends at the family cottage on Moody Beach in Wells, ME where he was considered by some as “The Mayor of Moody Beach.” He will be dearly missed by all. He is lovingly survived by his daughter Shelly McGuiggan and her companion Mark Menici of Danvers; his cherished grandchildren Casey O’Donnell of Salem and Kyle O’Donnell of Danvers, and a large, caring extended family and countless friends. His family is at peace knowing that he is reunited with his late wife Jeannie, his beloved son Danny, his parents, sister and many extended family members. His family acknowledges with a grateful heart the wonderful care given to him by the North Shore Medical Center staff and Lynnfield Medical Associates. A visitation on Thursday from 4 – 8 P.M. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Friday January 18, 2013 at 9 AM from the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Adelaide’s Church, 708 Lowell St., Peabody. Expressions of sympathy may be made to a charity of one’s choice. A Celebration of Dan’s Life will be held on July 4th at Moody Beach in Wells, ME. Burial in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
