Obituary of Julio C. Couceiro
Julio C. Couceiro, 83, of Peabody, passed away early Thursday morning at the NSMC-Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Salem after a prolonged battle with kidney disease. He was the beloved husband of the late Rosa (Paiva) Couceiro, who passed away in 1998.
Julio was born in Condeixa-a-Nova, Portugal on December 8, 1929, the son of the late Manuel and Piedade (Cocenas) Couceiro. He was raised in Portugal until immigrating to Salem, MA with his family in 1966. Shortly thereafter he made his home in Peabody, where he resided until his death.
For many years Mr. Couceiro worked with his brother at Pioneer Tanning in Salem. He then moved to Sam Spatafore & Son in Salem, concluding his working career at GTE Sylvania in Danvers, where he was an assembler until his retirement in 1996.
Julio was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Peabody. He was also a lifelong member of the Clube de Luis Cameos in Peabody, a member of the Our Lady of Help Hall in Peabody, and also a member of the Portuguese Continental Union. The thing he enjoyed the most was being surrounded by his loving family. Some of his other interests were gardening, making his own wine, reading, and watching his favorite soccer team, Sporting.
He is survived by his children, Julio and his wife Kathleen Couceiro of East Longmeadow, MA, and Rosa and her husband Jose Romano of Peabody; his grandchildren, David and Paul Romano of Peabody, and Matthew and Kendra Couceiro of East Longmeadow, MA. He is also survived by a brother and his wife, Alberto and Amelia Couceiro of Portugal, a brother-in-law and wife Antonio and Emilia Paiva of Portugal and a sister-in-law, Josephine Couceiro of Peabody, as well as, many nieces, nephews and family friends. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his siblings, Maria Emilia, Francisco, João, Antonio, Manuel, José, and Manuela Couceiro.
A Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 until 7:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. His funeral will be held on Monday at 8:00 AM at the Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Walsh Ave., Peabody at 9:00 AM.
