Obituary of Arthur Winthrop Bartol, Jr.
Arthur W. Bartol Jr., 87, of Brooksby Village, Peabody and formerly of the Rialside section of Beverly, a well known and talented Jazz musician on the Northshore, died Tuesday evening at his residence after a long illness. He was the husband of Phyllis (Little) Bartol with whom he shared 42 years of marriage.
He was born in Salem on July 1, 1914 to the son of Arthur W. And Selma (Grant)
Bartol Sr. His mother died shortly after giving birth to Arthur and was raised by his
Father, Arthur and his step-mother, Helen (Brock) Bartol and resided in Salem and
Beverly before moving to Peabody a year ago. He was a graduate of Salem High
School and Salem State College.
He was first employed as a Route Delivery Man for the
Former J.B. Blood Bakery for 10 years. He then became a machinist for the former
Reid Brothers Machine Corp. of Beverly for 16 years prior to his retirement.
His love and compassion was his music as he played the Saxaphone, Clarinet and the
Jazz violin and was a member of the Musician’ s Local 126 for the past 50 years.
He played all the top spots on the Northshore and in Boston, including the Roxy,
Sandy’ s of Beverly, Lennies on the Pike in Peabody, The Tavern in Danvers, Seaside
In Beverly and Angelica’ s in Middleton. He played with many of the big bands including, Bobby Hackett, Dick Donovan, Artie Cronk and many others.
He was a veteran of WW 11 serving in the United States Marine Corps .
Surviving him besides his wife are 2 sons and daughter-in-laws, Arthur W. And
Elizabeth Bartol 111, of Florida and David and Tracey Pelletier of Salem; 5 daughters
And 3 son-in-laws, Shirley Ann and Charles Marts of Florida, Betty Harrington of
N.H., Nancy and Donald Dunn and Judith and Thomas Cagney all of Beverly, Ma.
And Marilyn Comeau of Wyoming; a sister, Phyllis Bartol Currier of Danvers,
23 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2002 at the South Congregational Church, Prospect St., Peabody. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Inurnment will be in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Hospice of the Northshore, 10 Elm St., Danvers ,Ma. 01923 or the PMCNS, P.O. Box 374, Peabody, Ma. 01960 in his memory.
